How Big John’s became Smokey John’s

John Reaves opened his first restaurant in 1976 after people began asking to buy his smoked hams and turkeys. The family says a smoke-filled afternoon prompted a regular to suggest the Smokey John’s name. Gloria Reaves and cousin Douglas Spraglin also helped build the business.

Hickory smoke and a new brisket chapter

The restaurant describes its barbecue as hickory-smoked, with Southern sides and family recipes. In August 2026, local reporting described a new all-wood smoker and changes to the brisket program as the business marked fifty years. This gives the restaurant a current story as well as a long history.

A Mockingbird Lane lunch or early dinner

The restaurant is in Suite 18 at 1820 West Mockingbird Lane. Its own site publishes Monday through Saturday service from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and closes Sunday. This is a Love Field-area meal, separate from the Main Street smokehouses in Deep Ellum.
